Summer Seminar: Art of Reading the Novel with Jane Eyre
“Literary experience heals the wound, without undermining the privilege, of individuality … in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself … here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.” - C.S. Lewis
This signature course emerged as a labor of love after years of contemplating “how to read well” & how to guide others toward an appreciation of classic literature. Using Jane Eyre as a model, we will focus on the novel literary form (as it is both current and accessible), while I serve as guide, providing tips and tools for future reading experiences.
Recommended age: high school to adult. With your registration, you can either join “live or later,” as this course will be recorded for future viewing and will be available as recordings once each live session is complete.
This course meets Tuesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 Central for 6 weeks. Limited to 25 spots.
Meeting dates: June 24th, July 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th
Week 1: Entering the Gallery of Great Literature
Week 2: Why Read “Classic” Novels & Where to Start
Week 3: Understanding the Literary Timeline & Tradition
Week 4: The 5 Questions to Ask at the Beginning
Week 5: How to Read a Novel Well
Week 6: Joining “The Great Conversation”
(Note: Summer Camps & Seminars are Nonrefundable, but spots can be transferred.)
